You can help our youth by taking part in the first virtual Mr Price Foundation Challenge on December 5 and 6. The event aims to raise funds to help break the cycle of poverty and inequality in South Africa through its education and skills development programmes.
Calling all cyclists and runners, professional and amateur, to join the virtual Challenge powered by the Mr Price Foundation (MPF) in partnership with the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA). The event will offer fitness fanatics, young or old, the opportunity to ride or run distances ranging from 3km to 606km.
“This is the first time ever that the event will be open to the general public for participation. You and your family and friends can help us make this the biggest virtual sporting event in South Africa, or even the world,” said Karen Wells, Head of the Mr Price Foundation. “For the past decade, the annual Ride with Purpose was open to a small, limited number of cyclists, due to the intensity and distance of 606 km, over two days, from Secunda to Durban. Now anyone who wants to help make a difference can take part,” she added.
Over the past ten years, a small dedicated group of cyclists managed to raise over R5 million for the Mr Price Foundation. This year, due to the impact of the COVID-19, the event will be virtual, presenting an exciting opportunity for anyone who wants to participate and raise funds for a worthy cause.
South Africa’s toughest cycle ride has partnered with the world’s toughest ultra-marathon for a common purpose, to empower thousands of young South Africans. The Foundation currently impacts 77, 818 learners daily, in 98 schools across the country, through its holistic schools programme. It also trains unemployed youth for the world of retail and supply chain through Jump Start, its skills development programme.
“I am very excited about this inaugural event which is hosted in partnership with the Comrades Marathon Association! The event, by nature of it being virtual as well as incorporating running, is far more inclusive and creates an even greater opportunity for participation and fundraising from across the globe. The funds raised will contribute to the Foundation’s education and skills development programmes, which have already made a difference to many lives in South Africa,” shared Mark Blair, CEO of the Mr Price Group.
CMA General Manager, Keletso Totlhanyo said, “This event gives both runners and cyclists a reason to participate, in that they can contribute to something greater than themselves. We could not be more proud to partner with the Mr Price Foundation on this inaugural virtual challenge, bringing both runners and cyclists together, raising funds for a worthy initiative that seeks to empower the youth of our country.” For more information on how to join the Challenge with Purpose and make a difference to young South African lives, go to www.mrpricefoundationchallenge.org
